Mini Goldendoodles of NY

About the breed

Where do Goldendoodles come from?

Goldendoodles are an American hybrid. They are a cross between a Poodle and a Golden Retriever.

They were invented in the 1990s, and have been stealing hearts ever since.

Unlike many other "designer dogs", the Goldendoodle has a national breed club - GANA. The coat type, sizes, and temperament are being standardized through the member breeders who are committed to the development of the breed.

Genetic Makeup:

Our Goldendoodles are multi-generation puppies. They are 75% poodle, and 25% Golden Retriever. They 100% are pure Goldendoodle.

You may have heard of F1, F1B, F2, and multi-generation. These are acronyms for the generation of the dog. Dogs with a "B" in their generation, are back-crossed with either a purebred poodle, or purebred golden retriever.

F1  = Golden Retriever x Poodle. (50% Poodle, 50% Golden Retriever)

F1B = F1 Goldendoodle x Purebred Poodle. (75% Poodle, 25% Golden Retriever)

F2 = F1 Goldendoodle x F1 Goldendoodle ( 50% Poodle, 50 % Golden Retriever)

F2B = F1 Goldendoodle x F1B Goldendoodle ( 62.5% Poodle, 37.5% Golden Retriever)

Our Multi-gen Goldendoodle: F1B Goldendoodle x F1B Goldendoodle (75% Poodle, 25% Golden Retriever)

Are Goldendoodles Hypo-Allergenic?

Buyer beware any breeder that promises a hypo-allergenic dog. There is really no such thing - however some people will have little or no allergic reaction to certain dogs. We welcome you to come meet our dogs, handle them, and see how you react if you have allergies.

Do Goldendoodles Shed?

Our Goldendoodle's are not prone to shedding. You may find a hair here and there, but you are not going to find clumps of dog hair rolling around your house like tumbleweeds. You can pick them up and put them down without being covered in dog hair. They have a very poodle-like coat, with varying degrees of curliness.

Are Goldendoodles good with children?

Yes. The Goldendoodle is, in our opinion, the quintessential family dog. They are very tolerant of children, playful, and friendly. They are not aggressive by nature. Proper socialization is necessary for all dogs. We have a large family, and the puppies will be introduced to adults and children at an early age. The socialization process starts with us, but continues in your home.

Do Goldendoodles make good guard dogs?

NO! Goldendoodles are not aggressive dogs. They make instant friends with everyone they meet. They may bark when they hear someone at the door, or at another dog passing by - but they don't bark excessively.

Are Goldendoodles easy to train?

Yes! They are highly intelligent and eager to please, making them excellent candidates for training. All of our puppies leave already knowing the "sit" command. We recommend training "stay", "Leave it", "down", and "off" as well.

English vs. American Goldendoodles

A Comparison

We breed both English and American Goldendoodles. The distinction between the two is informal - both are classified as Goldendoodles by GANA.

An English Goldendoodle is a cross between an English Golden Retriever and a poodle. An American Goldendoodle uses the American Golden Retriever instead.

Structure

  • The English Goldendoodles have a more stout, elongated structure as a rule, however due to the poodles influence we still see some finer boned, square puppies from time to time. Ears are lower set and droopy.
  • American Goldendoodles tend to be more square, lean, and have longer legs. Ears are set higher, may be more erect, smaller.

Color

  • Thanks to the introduction of the color profile of poodles English and American Goldendoodles can come in any color.

Coat

  • The English Goldendoodles tend to have thicker coats, matting will be more of an issue. Better suited to cold climates.
  • The American Goldendoodles tend to have slightly thinner coats, however still relatively thick and fluffy - matting is STILL and issue and daily brushing is still required.
  • Both varieties are low to non shedding, however the American Goldendoodle having less hair will shed less hair.

Health

  • Both varieties benefit from Hybrid Vigor. Hybrid vigor is the disease resistance and longer lifespan resulting from the introduction of "fresh blood" - expanding the gene pool. Cross bred dogs, especially health tested cross bred dogs on average are healthier than their pure bred cousins.
  • The quality diet we have our dogs on has over the years results in LONG LIFESPANS for all our dogs, regardless of breed (we have bred Dobermans, silky terriers, poodles and now goldendoodles). Diet is DIRECTLY linked to lifespan and the incidence of cancer among other diseases. Our goal is to have our dogs live past 20 years of age. So far our oldest lived to 19 years and 9 months, but we are always learning and striving to push that envelope.
  • If you keep your dog on a raw or fresh food diet, provide 2 hours of exercise per day, and love them well and minimize enviornmental toxins we expect a minimum of 16 - 20+ years out of the minis regardless of variety. If you feed kibble, do not exercise your dog sufficiently, and allow them to be exposed to chemical treatments and enviornmental toxins we expect a lifespan of 12 - 15 years regardless of variety. We will help guide you in promoting longevity, but we respect that every dog owner will come to their own conclusions regarding diet and health care.
  • There have been no formal studies regarding a difference in health between The American and English Goldendoodle varieties - however we expect lower rates of cancer and possibly slightly longer lifespans from English lines based on studies done in Golden Retrievers. We do not expect to see as significant a difference in health as you see in the Golden Retrievers as our dogs are 75 - 82% poodle.

Professionally Pre-Trained Puppies

***Limited availability per litter***

***Foundations: $4,000.00 deposit required***

Foundations for Working Dogs: If you are interested in a pre-trained puppy, please reach out to us. We are in the process of developing a program where in addition to basics provided for all our 8 week old puppies, a suitable puppy (hand selected by us) will undergo 4 to 8 weeks of positive reinforcement obedience training with a professional trainer.

We may be able to add a-la-carte tricks and skills as needed, depending on the puppies aptitude.

The Foundations for Service Work course builds off our Housebreaking and Obedience course and includes leash work and fine tuning specific skills needed for service.

We will work on important life skills such as:

  1. Crate Training - puppies will learn to go into their crate, and stay there for up to two hours.
  2. Play Pen Training - puppies will learn to go into and stay in their playpen overnight.
  3. House Training - puppies will learn that they should "go potty" outside only. We will wean them off the wee-wee pads/puppy litter.
  4. Basic Commands - puppies will learn to come when called by their new name, sit, stay, leave it, down and no.
  5. Intro to Car-rides - puppies will learn to sit by themselves in the back seat of the car, with safety gear for 30 minute car rides.
  6. Loose Leash Training - puppies will learn to walk politely on a loose leash.

No two dogs are a like, and all learn at their own pace. We don't guarantee perfection, but we do promise to lay a strong foundation of good manners, social skills, and obedience. We will equip you with the training and continued support needed to maintain the good habits established here.

If you are interested in either Foundations or Housebreaking & Obedience please check our our pre-trained puppies page.
